With many schools starting this week, the trip to the stores to buy school supplies is an almost universal journey for students and parents alike. Not too many years ago, the school issued supply list would typically include pens, pencils, erasers, notebooks and for boys JOCKSTRAPS. Most of us recall getting our first jock for gym class about 7th or 8th grade, when the threshold of puberty was approaching. What is lost in memories is that in many schools, boys as young as 3rd and 4th grade (8 and 9 years old) found that gym class was now called physical education accompanied by mandatory group showers and the requirement to wear a regulation athletic supporter during class. Why? I really don't know as prepubescent male anatomy typically presented little to support. Regardless, as a manufacturer's representative, I made a living selling wholesale stuff including physical education uniforms, and in the course of fetching sales leads I accumulated many, many school supply lists describing PE uniform requirements, and with the pleasure of our website host I will post them in messages which will follow. As you peruse one, several or all of these lists keep in mind that each school likely had a hundred or more male PE students, and each student probably had a notable memory as he donned his first jock.
