Naked swimming in PE class

Seeking forbearance from site host John, this post really has nothing to do with jockstraps but rather some memories of mandatory PE classes,
in a bygone era. Since many forum contributors have related their introduction to jockstraps from their school PE experience, perhaps some might
find the article and images of interest. There are several photos of the "straddle pipe" devices found in school tunnel shower designs on the internet, but the Yale
article is the only first hand memory I have found to date. There is a link on the magazine page to the writer's memories of the mandatory freshman nude posture photos. The posture image is remarkable only in context that EVERY freshman student (of both genders) were required to pose for these photos at Ivy League schools for several decades. Your thoughts?

Over the years I have read countless stories and social media posts about naked swimming classes up until the 1960s. i have seen some of those nude posture photos but never knew the source. I can kind of understand the nude swimming for boys especially back at a time when many young post high school men/boys were likely going to enter the military at which point they better be comfortable being naked around others without much privacy. The posture photos though are just pretty weird.

Here's a fascinating and very well researched article pertaining to the history of mandatory nude swimming in the USA for school-aged boys in many different States, as well as college aged men at various Universities. It includes several different sections from various reliable sources of different time frames. There's also many links included which discuss personal experiences, along with media coverage, photographs, videos, documentation sources, and other detailed information.

(Although I was involved in competitive swimming throughout my school aged years, I didn't personally experience any requirements pertaining to swimming nude in school since this practice was largely extinct prior to my school age years.)

Very interesting. The nearest high-school to me in Ottawa, Canada had a pool and I was horrified when I heard about nude swimming. In desperation, I managed to go to a much older highschool, which had no pool. No showers either until summer between Grades 9 and 10. At that point, following an accident on the parallel bars, I got out of Phys. Ed. for good.

20+ years later, after coming out I went to a naked swim evening with a group of gay men, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Also would swim naked for a few minutes in a large, warm jacuzzi at .... the Y.

Times change, and so do men.

A naked swim evening sounds like a great time! And this was sanctioned by the Y??

While growing up, I frequently accompanied my father for Saturday, swims at our (men/boys-only) YMCA, There was a YWCA a couple of blocks away (accommodating the females). Nudity was mandatory at the YMCA pool, as we complied without a second thought. At one end of the long gang shower room was an open doorway to the swimming pool. It was suggested that nude swimming was one way to assure that all the guys got their “nude soap showers required” before taking the plunge! We were also told that swimsuits were prohibited to keep pool filtration from clogging with related fibers and threads (Yet, as a prepubescent, I thought that nude, hairy men could cause the same problem?). That might have only been part of it, as I suspect that decades prior, beach/swimming attire was “bathing costume” (for men and women) covering much of the body. It would seem logical that the YMCA, being men-only, made nude swimming a much more comfortable, convenient option without the cumbersome bathing costume of mixed gender public/beach swimming.
Likewise, my high-school (all male) required nudity for all PE swimming/lifesaving classes, and swim team practices. The coaches insistEd that requirement kept the locker room free of mold/mildew from wet swimsuits … No swimwear=no wet swimwear.
Similarly, all gym/PE gear (shorts, shirts, socks, jocks, etc.) were required to be removed from lockers by end of school day, every Friday, to be sure the items were washed over the weekend. The coaches barked frequently “guys, take all your gear home for the weekend. We don‘t want this locker room reeking of your rancid jockstraps come Monday morning!” Though, in hindsight (and jock-sniff fetish), that might not have been all bad !?
My appreciation of nudity and athletic wear/jockstrap requirements was always apparent, though not openly acknowledged.
Just wondering if many/any adolescent guys of decades past encountered similar [swimming or PE/locker room] requirements?

Not the Y! It was a public indoor pool, which TNTMEN (Totally Naked Toronto) rented for the evening. This was (is?) a gay men's group. Not sure if it is still running after COVID's arrival. https://www.tntmen.org/about
I’ve had a few great naked swims as an out of town/country visitor, with TNTMEM, several years ago. Great group. While nudist groups are great fun, and a relaxing way for activities/parties, I’m also wondering if any groups/organizations exist (anywhere) that focus on gatherings of “Jockstrap Enthusiasts“ … J-MEN - Jockstrap Men, Jockstrap Supporters, etc. Actual in-person meetings (as society emerges from COVID) could be a great way for like-minded “strappers” to interact. If you know of any such groups, please post here, or a message/email to me on this site.

Pretty sure that most, if not ALL, YMCA pools require proper swimwear now, since they all [seem to be] co-Ed facilities. The reality is that the ”M” (for Men) and “Y” (for Young) in YMCA, are just so the non-profit organization keeps some sort of [traditional] name recognition over the decades. And the remaining “C” (for Christian) hardly suggests that nudity would ever again be considered for swimming…. Unfortunately! I‘ve recently learned that a few YMCA’s (in more conservative/sensitive areas) now require the men to wear swimsuits/shorts in the gender-segregated sauna and steam rooms. Seems ridiculous, but probably in response to requests/complaints of a few vocal members ?

I would love to see a jockstrap get-together happen. I was part of a planning committee for a "dads weekend" where it was just going to be a bunch of dads getting together for camping/locker room banter/fucking each other's brains out, but people kept dropping out of it

New sign at my local YMCA. Times have definitely changed. Now it’s bad to be naked in the locker room too

I don’t get it ! Is our male human body suddenly something which we now hide in shame, and take fear in revealing, in a men’s locker/shower room? A more appropriate sign (to cover the ridiculous post as photographed) would be, “those offended by human nudity, DON’T LOOK.” …. or a precautionary entrance sign, “Entering a men’s locker/changing/shower room, male nudity may be encountered and expected.”

At all times? That branch of YMCA needs to go under.
I agree ! Banning nudity in a single gender facility with [clothes storage] lockers and showers only draws attention to what lies beneath [the towels/garment] in a negatively curious way…. the “forbidden fruits” of nudity, as experienced in the Garden of Eden? Again, my suggestion: A sign stating, “…if offended by nudity, look UP, or cover your eyes in this facility”
